Please join the Department of Communication and Culture on Friday, March 23, 2012 to hear Professor Maria Bakardjieva's talk entitled “Mothers in Arms: BG-Mamma as a Civic Subject”. The presentation is part of the Department of Communication and Culture’s Triple C Speaker Series and will take place in the Department’s Faculty Lounge, SS217 from 12:00 to 1:00pm. It will be followed by a reception.

 

University of Calgary Film Society - Iranian Film Series

March 9, 16, and 23 2012

The following is a series of films presented in collaboration with scholar Dr. Hamid Naficy's visit on March 30th, 2012. Dr. Naficy is leading a discussion on the history of Iranian film. That evening, a screening of the latest global hit from Iran, documentary This is Not a Film, will be screened at the Plaza Theatre.

The University of Calgary Film Society has put together a program of three films made in Iran to gear up Calgary for the event! Screenings are on Friday afternoons at 4pm in Professional Faculties 126, University of Calgary. Screenings at the University are ABSOLUTELY FREE and open to everyone.

Beauty is a powerful force in our world. Our obsession with beauty has resulted in many great accomplishments in human creativity throughout history. Beauty is a source of pleasure for those who see and experience it. However, it can also be a source of pain for those who feel restricted by society's idea of what is beautiful. Some view standards of beauty as a form of oppression. Who really determines what is beautiful? What are the consequences of our current views surrounding beauty? Is the idea of beauty good for us? How can we enjoy beauty without getting ugly?
