Graduate Programs

The graduate programs in Communication and Culture at the University of Calgary invite students to pursue their academic interests in the critical study of communication and culture. We offer a stimulating and dynamic environment, a community of students from around the world, and a faculty dedicated to fostering an environment in which students can reach their full academic potential.

This year, the graduate programs in the Department of Communication and Culture are making some exciting changes. At the moment we have two programs, one in Communication Studies and another in Culture and Society. In September 2012, these programs will be reorganized to become one Graduate Program in Communication and Culture. The new program will combine the strengths of both current programs, offering interdisciplinary scholarship and rigorous theoretical and methodological grounding. It will continue to encourage students to develop unique programs of study that reach beyond traditional topical boundaries.

We anticipate that the new Communication and Culture program will take effect in July of 2012.  In September 2012, new students will enter the Communication and Culture program.

Professors in the Department of Communication and Culture come from a variety of disciplines and perspectives and have strong records of achievement in scholarship and professional activity. Many are internationally known. All are committed to the critical analysis of communication and cultural phenomena. Our approach is primarily qualitative and many professors and graduate students are involved in research that offers a return to both the academic and the general communities.

Our faculty and programs focus on the following areas of research:

  • Social contexts of science and technology
  • Media and film studies
  • Sociocultural approaches to communication
  • Critical health studies
  • Social and global justice

Students are not limited to these areas and can choose to take their program of study in innovative directions.
